Information for Leaders
Dear Leader,
This document has been produced to help organisers and leaders of groups visiting
the camp site.
Middlewood is a Scout Campsite, and as such, operates differently to 'public'
campsites.
Please take your time to understand the information below and advise your members
accordingly.
We hope you have an enjoyable camp.
In order to improve camping standards and to preserve the site for future users
we would ask that you take note of the following points:
- The campsite is manned by a voluntary team of wardens, most of whom have
full time jobs, please bear in mind they may not be available during normal
weekdays. We will do what ever we can to accommodate users of the site.
- Camper's vehicles are NOT permitted to enter the site beyond the car park.
Where possible the team will assist in transporting equipment, trailers etc.
to and from the car park.
- Youth visitors should be encouraged to carry their own personal kit to and
from the site.
- Do not leave litter. Preferably it should be burnt in camp and all non burnable
remains/refuse placed in bin bags and placed in the bins on the car park.
- Encourage your camp to pick up litter even when it is not their own. This
will serve as an example to others.
- Do not damage the trees and bushes, material for bivouacs etc. may be found
on the woodpile.
- No fires are to be made on the ground. Middlewood stands on peat land and
fires on the ground can be very dangerous. Please use the barrels and alters
available form the camp centre. If your site has a fixed stone fire altar,
please still use a barrel as this preserves the life span of the altar.
- Be courteous to other campers, ask their permission before crossing their
sites and respect their right to privacy.
- During busy weekends the camp team may operate a toilet cleaning rota. This
will involve each group taking a turn at mopping out and wiping down the sinks.
This normally takes around 15 minutes. The Duty Warden will advise on the
Friday if this is in operation and agree a suitable slot time with each group.
- The grassed are to the front of the Warden's Cabin and complex is known
as 'The Flag Green'. This area MUST NOT be used for camping and normal activities/games
and is reserved for flag breaks and formal ceremonies. Organisers are welcome
to discuss any potential use in advance with the Camp Warden.
- The Chapel Site. This is a site laid out as a simple open air chapel. The
chapel is available for all faiths to use for reflection and service. Please
advise the Duty Warden of any requrements.
LRP groups, we request that this area is made 'out-of-bounds' except, as described
above during 'time-outs'.
When breaking camp:
- Extinguish your fire, bag your ashes and place in the car park bins. Do
not dump your ashes anywhere on site.
- Ensure all fire barrels and altars are returned to the camp centre.
- Return all unused wood to the woodpile and stack neatly behind the fence
line.
- Dismantle and clear all bivouacs, shelters.
- Return any borrowed equipment to the Duty Warden.
- When satisfied your camp is clear, ask the Duty Warden to inspect the site.
Thank you and Happy Camping!
